Drivers crossing multiple lanes of traffic that is going at least 55 mph makes for fast and dangerous decision-making -- regardless of the drivers' age or whether they're local. All those entries onto U.S. 278 from a standing start or stop sign without merge lanes is nothing but hazardous.
This is a major design flaw that the state review team needs to seriously evaluate. A good start would be eliminating most, if not all, cut-throughs. Also, construct frontage roads that connect strip malls. This would provide safer outlets to U.S. 278 at traffic lights. It might be costly, but at what price have all those accidents, hospital stays, car repairs, injuries and death come?
Slowing down speeders and adjusting speed limits may help, but with so many folks only visiting here once per year, those actions will not solve the unsafe road issue year round.
