I do not believe the conditions along U.S. 278 nor the speed limit is causing wrecks. Impatience and poor judgment are likely culprits.
Save the taxpayers' money that is to be spent on a traffic audit and instead require that drivers learn courtesy and patience. Bombard them with TV alerts; include it in the driver's test and require a signed statement when renewing drivers' licenses.
As much as I don't think the speed limit is the cause, a slower limit would make drivers more aware. Kudos to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office and the Bluffton Police Departments for the added cruisers on U.S. 278. May we see them more often.
I especially enjoyed being in a caravan led by a sheriff's car from Buckwater Parkway to Moss Creek recently. It was interesting to watch a car shift from lane to lane, trying to advance until the driver became aware of the cruiser.
