There is no need to do an expensive audit of the traffic problems on U.S. 278 in Bluffton before making changes. The main change that is needed: Westbound and eastbound left turns should only be allowed on green arrow turn signals. Proper signs should make that clear to drivers.
The intersection of Buck Island Road and U.S. 278 appears to be the biggest problem. The right-turn lane coming from Buck Island Road should be a stop sign and not a yield sign. I have seen wrecks and near misses because it is being used as an acceleration lane. The result is that some drivers are pulling out in front of 55 mph traffic. If a stop sign is not feasible, then an acceleration lane should be added.
Lastly, the speed limit should be reduced as there are homes, businesses and several churches on both sides of U.S. 278 that have no traffic lights and have to take deadly chances to get onto the road.
