What did liberals do that was so offensive to the Republican Party and conservatives in particular? I'll tell you what they did.
Liberals got women the right to vote. Liberals got African-Americans the right to vote. Liberals created Social Security and lifted millions of elderly out of poverty. Liberals ended segregation. Liberals passed the Civil Rights Act.
Liberals passed the Voting Rights Act. Liberals created Medicare. Liberals passed the Clean Air Act. Liberals passed the Clean Water Act. Liberals passed the Medical and Family Leave Act. Liberals passed the Americans with Disabilities Act. Liberals passed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. Liberals passed legislation that ended the don't ask, don't tell policy. Liberals passed the Affordable Care Act.
What did conservatives do? They opposed them on every one of those things. They long for the "good old days" when only white males could vote, women stayed home, we embraced separate-but-equal, pollution was ignored and gays stayed in the closet.
So when someone labels me a liberal as if it were something to be ashamed of, something dirty, something to run away from, it doesn't work because I wear it as a badge of honor. I am proud to be called a liberal.
Essentially, liberals are responsible for most of the forward-looking legislation during the past century, focused on helping all Americans to more fully participate in the American Dream and expand the nation's resources.
