It has been reported that it took about two hours for the Arizona prison authorities to execute Joseph Wood, who was sentenced to death for the killing in 1989 of his ex-girlfriend and her father.
Reporters seemed shocked that the man gasped for breath for at least 110 minutes after being given a lethal injection. Relatives of his victims thought that his struggle for life was neither cruel nor unusual punishment.
The combination of drugs used in the injection was the same given in Ohio recently that also resulted in a botched or prolonged execution.
Now I read that a horse -- Dance With Fate, the winner of this year's Blue Grass Stakes -- had to be euthanized due to a freak training accident. I have seen horses and dogs "put down" in a matter of minutes. Why can't we find -- if the crime warrants it -- a way to do the same for our fellow man?
