Changes are needed in the plans for the Windmill Harbour entrance on U.S. 278. It could save Beaufort County, the Town of Hilton Head Island and the state at least $2.5 million. The current project is estimated to cost $5 million-plus.
I propose the following: * Install a traffic light at the entrance, a frontage road from Jenkins Road to the new traffic light at Windmill Harbour along the east side of U.S. 278 (the same side as Sunset Grill). * Provide a yellow alert light on the bridge as the traffic approaches Hilton Head Island to alert traffic of the traffic light changes. Also, close the Jenkins Road crossover on U.S. 278. * Change the speed limit on the bridge to 45 mph from the Bluffton traffic light at Moss Creek to Squire Pope Road. This will slow traffic approaching the island and make it safer for everyone. It will need to be enforced.
You can then eliminate all the other roads planned for this project and save taxpayers' money. This can all be achieved in a more timely manner and at less cost than the current plan. The lower speed limit will make it safer for everyone on Hilton Head and set a standard as people drive onto the island.
Please rethink the current plans and save the taxpayers some money. It can be done for less time and money and be a safer alternative.
