On reading the column on the depletion of blue claw crabs by David Lauderdale, I noticed that he failed to offer the most obvious solution.
I would recommend a moratorium on the taking of all female crabs with or without eggs until they make a comeback. That includes the taking of the females for soft shell crab festivals.
Harvesting females is greatly contributing to the demise of this wonderful resource that the Lowcountry has always enjoyed.
Never miss a local story.
