Recently, international voices, and our own president and secretary of state, called for a cease fire in Gaza due to the unfortunate number of civilian casualties. However, there is either a deliberate attempt at misunderstanding what is happening, a lack of moral clarity regarding the responsibility for those casualties, or even worse, a perception that they might be marginally acceptable if there were "proportionality" in the casualty numbers on both sides.
What needs to be understood are the facts. The Hamas terrorists in Gaza fired missiles at Israeli cities and other civilian targets. No nation can tolerate that. They were storing these missiles in tunnels, apartment complexes, schools, and hospitals and launching them from there. They did this to use their civilian population as human shields against military action by Israel.
Israel has taken pains through leaflets, text messages, and phone calls to warn civilians they should leave lest they be killed or injured in an attack on those sites. The responsibility for the fighting and the civilian casualties in Gaza rests with Hamas.
Any cease fire before the Israelis complete their action of destroying missiles, launchers, and the infrastructure supporting them would be a victory for the terrorists.
Our nation, and other western democracies, should support Israel, not hamper its ability to protect its citizens. While these nations say that Israel has the right to defend itself against indiscriminate missile attacks, they appear to criticize Israel when it actually does so.
