Your July 6 headline, "Runway Project Nears Next Step," begs me to ask if you would give some space for a citizen's rebuttal. Hence, some facts:
1. The reason there were only about 125 comments given at the public hearing (most, if not all, of them negative) was that the announcement for the hearing was a small advertisement the county ran on March 17. The hearing was held April 21, the Monday after Easter when many residents were involved with family or vacation.
2. The cavalier attitude of those pushing the airport project does not (nor does the Talbert & Bright report) accurately address the devastation that this will wreak on the ecosystem of the sound and the wildlife therein.
3. This project will marginalize all residents of the north end, exposing them to excess noise, pollution and drops in property values.
Never miss a local story.
4. The actual beauty of the entire landscape will be altered. The north end will look like the perimeter of any airport. For those of us who respect what this small island promises, we do not want another Savannah, Newark or JFK airport.
