After living here for two years, it does not take a rocket scientist to figure this out. Speed is the No. 1 factor for wrecks on U.S. 278. Period.
Since I have lived here, I have not seen a police officer patrolling the road ever. The only time I see police is when they are working an accident. I have never seen anyone pulled over for speeding. It seems to me that the police have been told not to ticket visitors; it's bad for business. You could actually pay for extra officers if you started ticketing speeders. When I follow the speed limit, people are passing me going 75 to 80 mph, and angry at me for going so slow. There is a tremendous amount of road rage.
The other factor is the number of seniors that cannot see and cannot react appropriately in congested traffic.
Thirdly, some of the visitors come from places where driving habits are quite different. Plus, they are all in a hurry to get started on their vacations. They speed all over without regard to the rules of the road because no one is ever stopped for anything.
Never miss a local story.
And, lastly, the length of time the highway's green lights stay green is forever, giving speeders the time and ability to pick up speed and drive like mad. There needs to be a better control of lights to slow people down.
