U.S. 278 in Bluffton is the most frightening stretch of road I have ever encountered, and I try to avoid it as much as possible. There is no need to conduct yet another study to assess the dangers of U.S. 278, especially one that seems to exclude the actual users.
I believe that, among others, the main reasons for the high accident rate are clear: aggressive speeding and fast lane-changing, tailgating, underestimating the speed of oncoming traffic when turning, constant use of cellphones and other devices, interacting with passengers, too fast of a speed limit, driving slower than the average speed, and a paucity of law enforcement.
I have driven in many cities and towns in different parts of the world, but have rarely witnessed the mayhem that occurs on U.S. 278.
Never miss a local story.
