Organizations become great for what they won't do as much as what they will do. Beaufort County Council has rightly decided not to put a 1 percent sales tax proposal before voters. Their responsibility is to be a check on increased taxes and unnecessary but nice-to-have projects. They must continue to be a watchdog over all special-interest groups.
The Beaufort County school board, with a budget more than twice that of the Town of Hilton Head Island, would have us vote every year to increase taxes. The Beaufort mayor doesn't get it. To their credit, the Hilton Head council members and the mayor were very skeptical from the beginning of this sales-tax proposal fiasco.
Many elected officials believe they are better at spending our money than we taxpayers are. Government must live within its means like the rest of us.
Making responsible judgments does not mean you hate children, parks, roads or infrastructure.
A no vote takes courage!
