Twenty years ago when we first moved to the Lowcountry, we drove to Savannah and noticed the strong chemical odor in the area. We asked someone what the odor was, and she replied, "What odor?"
Years have passed and we no longer notice the odor. However, every time we have guests and take them to Savannah, they remark, "What is that odor?" Obviously we've grown accustomed to it.
An environmental group has named the Savannah River as the third most polluted river in the country -- and it's the source of our drinking water. The Beaufort County water-utility officials have said that there's nothing that's happening on the Savannah River that they're not already aware of. I believe them. However, since they are aware of the obvious problems, they should be held accountable.
Never miss a local story.
