The Ottoman Empire, run by the Turks, provided some blanket of civilization pre-World War I. Even they stopped at leaving all the "tribal provinces" and nomads alone.
Things were fine in the desert until the Brits and French expanded their colonial experiments. The Brits created Iraq as a link to their India colony. The French "helped" establish Syria and the list goes on.
Post World War II, the allies "consolidated" the European Jewish population and provided them a homeland by forcing them and the Palestinians onto a tiny piece of land despite their opposing religions. Did they really have a chance?
The U.S. created a shah in Iran and sought Israel as a partner to ensure it had a seat, nukes and bases in the arena.
The results of converting desert tribes into Westerners:
* Syria is a mess. The French are long gone from there as well as Vietnam and every other "test colony."
* Iran is run by "clerics"; Libya spawned Qaddafi; Egypt is crazy; and India and Pakistan have nukes. And they all want to kill Americans while the U.S. has amnesia in Iraq.
* The Saudis survive and mind their own business.
Let's close the obrders here rather than clamor about human rights over there. The path is to vacate these nomadic lands and let them return to their preferred tribal ways.
