Just who is in charge at the S.C. Department of Parks and Recreation? Have they visited Port Royal in Beaufort County and looked at the state-owned property on Port Royal Sound? Could there be a new state park there?
Like Hunting Island State Park, a Port Royal park could be more than self-supporting. It could generate revenue. There could be a history museum to draw visitors from around the world with excursions to Santa Elena on Parris Island. The docks could be the makings of a marina.
If they can't see this parcel of land as being fit for a park or for some type of recreational use or as a draw for tourism, then perhaps they should consider a name change for their department.
