It was exciting to read that a group of private citizens has taken the initiative to present to Hilton Head Island Town Council a comprehensive plan for a performing arts center. This center is needed and essential to increasing the quality of life for those of us who live here and attracting future tourists who would enjoy an entertainment option other than reading a book on the beach. The thought of a suitable place for our great orchestra that could draw top-notch performers and could also accommodate more people than the current Arts Center of Coastal Carolina is exciting.
The citizens group plan, however, does not seem to include incorporating the current arts center. The arts center by all accounts is unsustainable because it is too small and aging. Perhaps it would be prudent for the town to get both parties together and negotiate a plan that serves everyone's interest. Use the $5 million reportedly needed to fix up the arts center as a down payment for a new, modern and adequate performing arts center.
Our town has a wonderful opportunity to lead a solution-based effort to provide for the future. The island is currently going through a period of revitalization. Let's add a performing arts center to the mix. Thank you, private citizens.
