We used to have a farmers market at Honey Horn on Friday mornings. It was mainly farmers with their produce, plus a nice assortment of other vendors. The market was well-attended, and it was such a pleasure to go. I do not know who ran that market or the details of why it was disbanded.
However, we now have a "farmers" market run by the Island Recreation Center at Shelter Cove Community Park. I just returned from there, and there was one stand selling produce. Whether it was local produce, I do not know.
The remainder was a hodgepodge of the usual vendors selling dumplings, perogies, bread, cookies, health supplements and assorted foods. All fine offerings, but it is not a farmers market where you can buy fresh, local produce from the grower. Last year, I wrote to the rec center about the same issue, and they courteously replied about their difficulties.
This new installment is not a farmers market, and the center should stop billing it as such.
Never miss a local story.
Bring back the people who ran the one at Honey Horn.
