My husband and I feel strongly that the request by JAZ Development to exceed Beaufort County's 10 percent impervious surface goal so a Bluffton shopping center can be built should be denied. Research repeatedly points to the unique high salinity characteristics of our Port Royal Sound ecosystem and its role as a major spawning ground. Fresh water, clean or not, is a pollutant that so many are not aware of. Because our marine ecosystem is special, we should not allow outside consultants to dictate its management.
Also, homeowners in the area have observed tiny feeder streams on this property that swell after heavy rainfalls. Hopefully, drainage for these streams has also been taken into account by the JAZ development team.
Beaufort County has come so far in setting up an intelligent line of defense for our waters -- from a river task force to Friends of the Rivers to the storm water utility. Surely, this awareness of public concern and personal desire to develop responsibly supersedes the desire for economic growth at any cost.
