This is a response to your April 5 editorial, "Too few candidates seek to represent area."
In order to run as a Democratic or Republican candidate in the 2014 Beaufort County Council election, the candidate must pay $459.36 to the S.C. Democratic Party or the S.C. Republican Party. This fee is calculated by taking 1 percent of the salary and multiplying by the number of years in the term (four years). In 2004, Beaufort County Council passed (on a 6-5 vote) a salary increase for themselves, de facto increasing the filing fee.
Being a fiscal conservative and socially moderate, I decided to run as an Independence Party candidate for Beaufort County Council District 4, which consists of southern Beaufort, and northeastern Port Royal.
The Independence Party, similar in thinking to Blue Dog Democrats and Main Street Republicans, has no filing fee for Beaufort County Council.
If anyone in future years plans to run for County Council, make a note of the filing fees. With November less than seven months away, the elections office said my name will appear on the ballot.
