A progressive, federal program called Common Core is usurping our education system just as school choice is gaining ground. It is a sheep in wolves' clothing. Many states that acquiesced not to lose federal funding now have serious misgivings. Thousands of teachers compare the roll out to Obamacare, and many principals reject it. The math and literature curricula are incomprehensible to the students.
My research found that grade school children cannot understand the questions and become so confused and frustrated that they give up. For example, a ludicrous question asks fourth graders to identify Judaism, Christianity and Islam as monotheistic religions.
Some educators fear Common Core will replace classic literature with biased-information texts and more progressive ideology. This curriculum does not prepare our children to compete internationally but rather lowers the bar.
Common Core teaches children to trust the government to make all the right decisions and paints a negative view of America and its ideals. It is a Trojan horse for advancing progressive indoctrination. State and local autonomy is swept aside for the so-called common good. Liberal and conservative scholars warn that a one-size-fits-all program can never work, and as school choice is eliminated, the inner city students suffer most.
Never miss a local story.
Everyone concerned with their children's and grandchildren's education must seriously familiarize themselves with Common Core and make their voices heard before it is too late.
