I would like to pay tribute to our Piggly Wiggly -- the people's Piggly Wiggly on Boundary Street in Beaufort, which has been a firm anchor for the neighborhood for years.
Not all grocery stores need be huge boxes in far-off shopping malls; far better that they serve a neighborhood of loyal customers, and provide for their needs. Where else could one buy chicken feet or goat meat? This may seem trivial, but it is still more important than the mindless variation that fills so many stores.
With a few notable exceptions, we have finally succeeded in closing one of the last useful stores in downtown Beaufort (that area bounded by Bay, Ribaut, Boundary, and Carteret). So much for the phrase "highest and best use." So much for those folk who walk to buy their groceries.
I would like to thank manager Donald Goodwine for his years of courteous, personal service, and I ask him to pass on my thanks to his staff.
Never miss a local story.
My apologies for never trying the chicken feet, and we will miss you good folks and our Pig.
