A recent letter published regarding the use of consultants by local organizations prompted me to offer the following based on my experience of hiring and using consultants as well as working previously as a consultant.
Consultants are hired to offer advice and opinions on situations that the individuals hiring them are unable to handle or need support on. Being a consultant can be rewarding as advice and opinions cannot be interpreted as fact or as infallible proof.
And yet, fees are still paid.
Thus, consultants are never wrong.
The downside is that consultants can always be blamed if situations do not yield the hoped-for results. Credible consultants walk the path of pro and con, white and black, high or low, this or that via the advice-and-opinion road map.
Consultants usually win, but that's just my pro bono opinion.
