It's great to read the outpouring of responses for the life of the Home Depot cat. Considering our recent cold blasts, this would also be a great concern if the cat had to live outside. I hope Depot lives a long, healthy life. (Cats can actually live into their 20s.)
What struck a chord with me was that so many people responded to the fate of this one, aging cat. It would be wonderful if this same compassion were directed to the other numerous, homeless animals in our area. Every week, the newspaper features animals in need of a loving home. They are currently living in the area's animal shelters. Sadly, as a rule, the ones who usually get passed over for adoption are the older animals.
My husband and I adopted our two dogs and cat (now 13-, 6- and 7-years old) from the Hilton Head Island Animal Shelter. The joy and love they bring to our lives is immeasurable.
If you have room in your heart and home for a new family member, please consider saving other deserving animals -- ones who don't have an Internet following and aren't front page news. Or make a monetary donation in Depot's name to an area animal shelter.
