I continue to be amazed at the selfish, narrow-mindedness of our Republican and Democratic parties including those diehard, tunnel-vision citizen supporters, who continually defend their party's negative positions and poor performance. It seems their party can do no wrong while they condemn the opposition party to the detriment of our country. Unfortunately, some of their vehement and non-constructive opinions can often be found in our local media. The polarization and shenanigans in Washington, however, are causing disillusionment and distrust among many Americans -- an encouraging sign.
With Congress and the administration's approval rating near an all-time low, it is reported that a party dealignment trend is accelerating. Wikipedia defines dealignment as a decrease in party loyalty and affiliation.
A Pew Research study found that Americans increasingly want to put our nation's interest ahead of party loyalty, working to solve the many challenges we face. Pew also reported that independent voters have increased to 38 percent from 30 percent since 2004, while 45 percent of all young voters, ages 18 to 32, now favor non-party positions on issues -- a promising trend.
Hopefully, our younger voters will lead the way, encouraging independent, common sense thinking with a bipartisan approach to our country's needs. Our country needs new blood in Congress with a willingness to cooperatively address important issues.
Never miss a local story.
What is your responsibility? Let your party of preference and all representatives understand how you feel. Let's stop the nonsense in Washington.
