Each of the past few years, I have written letters, soliciting volunteers to judge Beaufort County science fairs. The response has been outstanding. Many very qualified scientists, engineers and others have joined our endeavor and found that it is very rewarding to participate.
The number of schools participating in science fairs has increased again this year. We will have participation by all the high schools in the county. This means that we need to recruit more judges.
May I ask again for your support? Our organization, the nonprofit Sea Island Regional Science Fairs (SIRSF), provides volunteer judges for science fairs in Beaufort County schools. Each year, between December and April, we judge more than 30 fairs from elementary to high school, both public and private schools. We have approximately 60 volunteers and we need to provide 15 to 25 judges for each of the participating fairs.
The winners of the individual school fairs then compete in the regional science competition, and we judge that event also. From there, the winners go to the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), sponsored by Intel.
Never miss a local story.
The skills needed for judges are experience in scientific/technical professions, such as engineering, chemistry, medicine and biology.
I would like to encourage you to join us; we will provide an orientation and guidelines for judging procedures.
If you are interested in volunteering, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 681-1956.
