While most women aim for jewelry, our governor, Nikki Haley, celebrates the season of peace with a gun. The paper reported on Dec. 27 that Haley had "generated buzz" after putting up a photo of herself and her Christmas present, a 9mm Beretta, on Facebook. She received 15,000 likes and 1,700 comments, most of them positive.
Basic statistics tell us that this is both biased and possibly incomplete data and should not lead to any conclusion. Biased because people following Haley on Facebook are mostly people that voted for her. And the data is possibly incomplete because there is no assurance that managers of the account erase comments they do not like.
I am not as naive as to predict that S.C. would disapprove in great numbers -- this is, after all, a tea party state ranking in 48th place in SAT scores. However, I do claim that there is not enough informed debate.
Perhaps, if we start by demanding more from our newspapers and get people thinking, education in S.C. will improve and with it, work prospects. Then, our governor's enticement of gun manufactures will not look like such an attractive economic development to voters.
