I knew Lester Lara, the Spanish teacher at H.E. McCracken Middle School who was criminally charged and placed on leave for allegedly hitting a disruptive student on the back, when I worked at University of South Carolina Beaufort. And I agree with those quoted in a news article that he is a kind, thoughtful person.
I have several teacher friends and I hold them in high esteem, knowing their jobs are extremely demanding. Teachers of today are required to teach for testing while dealing with behavior and social problems that are too frequent.
South Carolina and the entire country could improve our dismal standardized test ratings with a common sense approach: teaching our children respect for adults and an appreciation for an education. The countries that stress these basic lessons are way ahead of the U.S.
