I don't understand why people on the right insist on hyphenating the word, liberal, as in liberal-socialist. Liberal is synonymous with progressive, not socialist.
I can think of at least three Republican presidents who promoted liberal ideas. Abraham Lincoln: the abolition of slavery. Teddy Roosevelt: trust busting as well as land conservation, setting aside huge tracts of land for public parks. Richard Nixon: establishing the Environmental Protection Agency and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Nixon also initiated dialogue with the Soviet Union and red China. I don't think anyone would call these men socialists.
Most of the gains made in this democracy were liberal ideas: women's suffrage, child labor laws, the Civil Rights Act, Social Security and Medicare, to name a few.
And, for the umpteenth time, no one is coming to get your guns. No one is proposing to take away your guns. But 90 percent of us in this country cannot understand why any reasonable person would oppose universal background checks before guns can be purchased. And many of us cannot understand why a military-style gun is needed for sport or self-protection.
Never miss a local story.
Do you keep your weapon, fully loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition, at the ready in your home? It sounds scary to me, especially if there are children in the house. Or, do you tell an intruder who takes you by surprise, "Hold on a minute while I get my assault rifle out of the locked gun cabinet."
