When we encounter a stray pet, it's hard to know the right thing to do. But there are some things we can do to save strays from harm.
Pets left wandering the streets are vulnerable to automobiles, disease, starvation or attacks by predators. Think gators!
Missing pets in the area are sometimes picked up and used for bait in dog fighting. Often, folks involved in dog fighting look for "free to a good home" ads so they can secure a bait dog without cost. Giving animals to strangers is not in the pet's best interest, either.
I hope our community can come together and save animals from needless suffering. If you must surrender your pet and want to ensure its safety, take it to a no-kill shelter such as Hilton Head Humane Association (843-681-8686), Palmetto Animal League (843-645-1725) or Brookes Haven Animal Rescue (843-757-7387). Others are listed at www.peta.org.
Never miss a local story.
