With the completion of the widening of U.S. 278, a traffic accident is waiting to happen. For westbound traffic, at the end of the widening project, there is a terrible design flaw. The road widening ends at the bridge with three lanes turning into two lanes.
The problem is that the westbound road curves right as it approaches the bridge, and the left lane traffic ends and has to merge with the middle lane while driving on a road that is curving right. There is no advanced warning of this merge, and the distance to merge is too short and on a curve.
The merge lane must be lengthened, more painted arrows should be installed, merge warning signs should be installed to warn drivers of the upcoming movement and possibly a blinking light on the left side of the road to alert drivers of the movement.
Hopefully local residents will adjust to this design flaw by staying in the right lane when approaching the bridge. However, this area attracts a large amount of tourists who are not used to the roadway and the potential dangerous merge.
Never miss a local story.
