At a recent Hilton Head Island Town Council meeting, our town manager suggested that neither the boat owners, the town nor the state have money to remove the abandoned boats in Jarvis Creek. We are left to assume the shrimp boats might be left in the creek to rot away.
Imagine for a minute if these abandoned boats were on the beach at Port Royal Plantation, Palmetto Dunes or Coligny or in front of a few Sea Pines beachfront mansions. These abandoned boats would be removed immediately. Jarvis Creek should be given the same respect.
We are spending large amounts of money for beach restoration and art facilities, as well as Shelter Cove and Coligny renovations. We can certainly find the financial resources or the political leverage to get these boats removed.
The abandoned boats will become an increasing eyesore as they rot away in Jarvis Creek. Every tourist leaving our island will have these boats as their farewell view. Additionally, as the boats break up, they are causing safety and navigation issues.
Town Council needs to find a way to get these boats removed. Marc Grant is the council member representing the Jarvis Creek area. Please voice your opinion on the subject via his email address, email@example.com.
