The Affordable Care Act was signed into law March 23, 2010.
The Supreme Court upheld the law June 28, 2012.
President Barack Obama was re-elected November 6, 2012.
These are indisputable facts.
Never miss a local story.
There have been 43 attempts in the House to repeal or defund the Affordable Care Act, a magnificent misuse of time and taxpayer money. Now the tea party, headed by Texas Sen. Rafael "Ted" Cruz, wants to blow up the government because the Senate and Obama refuse to reopen the debate. Even if the tea party ultimately fails after throwing spaghetti at the wall to see whether it sticks, the stock market is going to buck wildly, and America's credit is likely to be downgraded -- again. All the credit for government dysfunction belongs to the Republican Party.
House leaders have lost all control of their members. Speaker John Boehner lurches from the destructive tactics of the tea party back to the good ol' boys of moderation, a classic no-win situation.
There is not an ounce of bipartisanship in the whole House, and the time for Republicans to have offered an alternative plan has long since passed.
Meanwhile, no one in South Carolina -- not Gov. Nikki Haley, not Rep. Mark Sanford -- is informing state residents to go to www.healthcare.gov. Starting today, you can shop the health insurance exchanges and compare the costs and benefits for yourself. Sounds like a plan to me.
