"We the people are the rightful masters of both Congress and the courts, not to overthrow the Constitution but to overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution." -- Abraham Lincoln
Judging from the approval rating of Congress, people have figured out the problem. Every election, we hope our representatives will act in the best interest of our country, our state and our people. What we get falls far short. All too soon they become minions of a political party and are absorbed into the power and money industry of Washington politics.
Einstein said insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. It's time to end the insanity.
The only way to kill the beast is to starve it from what provides power: money. Given the dependency of "our" representatives on the campaign funds provided by political parties and their partners, big banking and big industry, the only way to change the system is to make that money irrelevant.
Election laws can be changed at state and local levels. Restructuring (or eliminating) campaign finance at local levels would provide a level playing field for every candidate. Providing forums open to all candidates would eliminate the need to drown the electorate in campaign ads. The new system would eliminate political action committees and negative ads and would inform voters. Washington doesn't listen to us. Our local representatives do.
I look forward to the day when our elected officials go to Congress with the people's interest in the forefront, not the party's.
