The Rock the Block Back 2 School Rally was held Sept. 6 in Habersham. The evening celebrated the beginning of school and introduced our community to the students of Shanklin Elementary. The newspaper had a number of interesting photo opportunities that evening. Some examples:
The Shanklin Elementary chorus, consisting of 27 students, directed by Cynthia McKain, all dressed alike; Jeffrey Moss, our new superintendent of schools, Geri Kinton, newly elected school board member, Celeste Lavan, Shanklin's principal, and Phyllis Doyle, a United Way of the Lowcountry board member, all in attendance; an abundance of school supplies donated by the Habersham residents displayed in two trucks provided by Butler Auto; and an assortment of creative artwork done by the students of Shanklin's art teacher, Julie Rast.
We were disappointed that the newspaper chose to print a picture of a boy playing on a pirate ship. That photo certainly did not capture the essence of the evening.
In the future, we hope to see more photos and stories in the newspaper that highlight the talented students and teachers of our Beaufort County schools.
Editor's note: This letter also was signed by Friends of Shanklin members Pat Brennan, Patricia Turk, Cindy Collins and Susan Sadlier.
