Your Sept. 7 editorial correctly pointed out the importance of Harbor Island for nesting and migratory birds. The Harbor Island community certainly deserves the accolades provided in the State of Our Nation's Birds Report.
However, the Audubon Society was only one group that developed the report. The fourth State of Our Nation's Birds Report cast a much wider net.
It is a collaborative effort as part of the U.S. Native American Bird Conservation Initiative that involves federal and state wildlife agencies and scientific and conservation organizations. Included in this group are the Nature Conservancy, Ducks Unlimited, Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology, National Audubon Society, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and others.
The report was released by the heads of the U.S. Departments of Agriculture and Interior. Its development and reach go far beyond a single organization.
Never miss a local story.
