Having graduated from high school on Hilton Head Island many years ago and having spent most of my professional career working in the Lowcountry, I have experienced the joys and pains of growth in the region.
Today, my family and I have the opportunity to enjoy Hilton Head as visitors, coming several times a year. Two things stand out with each visit:
Why in the world is there no traffic light at the Windmill Harbour entrance? I see my life flash before my eyes with each running of the gantlet to cross U.S. 278. I guess the town is still upset Windmill Harbour was not annexed years ago, but with the soon-to-be-constructed flyover, the odds of serious accidents will increase dramatically.
Why doesn't the town of Bluffton or Beaufort County cut the grass along their primary roads? The new Bluffton Parkway extensions are great, but the lack of roadside maintenance is awful.
Never miss a local story.
I love the Lowcountry and hope to return as a resident one day. I just hope I survive future exits from Windmill Harbour to achieve that.
