A recent story about 26 lawmakers living for a week on a food stamp budget caught my attention.
These people are attempting to draw attention to the fact that House Republicans once again cut funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. It isn't enough that 50 million households don't have enough food; they managed to add 2 million more to that number. Most do not realize that many of those receiving SNAP benefits are under 18 years of age and live in low-income working households. So much for the claim about "family values." A society that allows children to go hungry should be ashamed. To call this need to eat being "dependent on government" is absurd.
Children are, by their very nature, dependent on parents, extended family, and yes, even government. And those who want these children to be born and then go hungry defy explanation. As a song says, "I believe the children are our future; treat them well and let them lead the way"
When we treat them badly, our future is in serious trouble.
To those who agree with these cuts, try eating on $4.50 a day and see how you like it. Maybe then you might be able to pick up a shred of compassion along with your meager groceries.
