In response to a previous letter stating that we should hold our politicians to higher standards, I suggest we live to those higher standards and demand the same from our elected officials. The reality is that our elected officials exhibit the characteristics of the society they represent.
The technological advances that helped make us a dominant world leader have outpaced humankind's ability to cope with the new paradigms and moral issues those very technologies created.
We have evolved into a confused society. We support the medical termination of fetuses, while opposing capital punishment for those committing heinous crimes. We spend more money per capita on our penal system than our children's education. Societal and corporate greed is now our new doctrine.
A perfect example of our self-defeating greed is our ongoing energy crisis. We had a wake-up call in 1974 and hit the snooze alarm. While we are one of the largest consumers of energy, we are also one of the largest exporters of oil. Why? Because we can make a greater profit selling it elsewhere. Now that we have discovered massive reserves of natural gas the big concern is exporting that natural gas, rather than using it to drive us toward energy independence.
If we were energy independent, do you think Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya would have taken such a toll on our young people and economy?
Wake up before creeping mediocrity consumes us.
