We sent a letter to Hilton Head Island's Town Council and manager asking them to provide a swimming and off-leash play area for dogs on a section of beach that is convenient and accessible without a gate fee.
The island has miles of beach, and it would be fair and reasonable to set aside a small section for dogs. Many taxpayers and visitors enjoy taking their dogs to the beach to play and exercise, and many visitors enjoy interacting with the dogs.
Many also cannot comply with the current restrictions on dogs at the beach and so are unable to enjoy the public beach.
The area could be posted and patrolled to make users aware of the designated area's limits and to enforce the proper handling of dogs off the leash. Those who are not dog friendly could stay clear of the area and walk around it on a dog-free path.
Never miss a local story.
We hope those who agree with this proposal contact the town to express support and to ask the town to revise the law.
