It was with much sadness that I read about problems encountered with building the sailing and rowing center on Hilton Head Island.
Hilton Head has much to offer, but surprisingly, despite being an island, offers nothing for these Olympic sports, except only in a small way if you join a private yacht club. Sailing is a magnificent sport and offers much enjoyment and knowledge of the seas. It is a great way to travel and learn these waters and even see the world without polluting the waters or earth. Rowing is a long-time Olympic sport that is a great strength builder. The U.S. has a great history in rowing. It is a sport at many universities, and in fact would make this area a draw for team practicing. Grace Kelly's dad and brother won several Olympic gold medals in rowing for the U.S.
The site for the center is a perfect place for Hilton Head schoolchildren to partake in these sports.
Hilton Head should encourage these activities and enlarge the scope of its fine reputation. Please, Town Council, review, approve and help build the sailing and rowing center. It is needed, and I am sure it will be a fine asset.
