Recently, several writers have claimed that science accepts nothing on faith. Wrong. Scientists make the following assumptions entirely on faith:
That the universe exists independent of humans.
That the universe is rationally ordered by mathematical principles.
That the universe consists solely of matter and energy.
That the universe has no purpose.
That the universe has no moral order.
That life evolved by chance.
That only propositions that can be empirically verified are true.
All these assumptions are based on faith because none can be empirically verified. Without such faith, science would never get off the ground.
