Congrats to Mark Sanford who managed to get into the 1st Congressional District seat.
Sanford got sham public forgiveness for his adulterous behavior as governor, even though he had been absent without leave, chasing his girlfriend to Argentina. The Air Force Reserve chose not to discipline him, neither for adultery nor being AWOL, both of which are punishable offenses.
In the last weeks of the campaign, he reinvented his opponent, Elizabeth Colbert Busch, claiming that nasty Nancy Pelosi, the hated socialist icon for the Republican right, controlled her. But more importantly, Sanford called it a race between "them" and "us," implying that "them" was the big bad Congress. Here was biblical David, South Carolina's answer to Goliath, to join the fight, similar to the Confederates firing on Fort Sumter -- you betcha.
I think he must be trying to figure out how to convince himself -- now that he has become one of them again -- that "them" is OK. He follows a long line of pols who, when caught with their pants down, imagine themselves as invisible.
A few years ago, his shenanigans made the Top 10 list of U.S. sex scandals. He's fifth behind Wilbur Mills, Gary Hart and first and foremost, Bill Clinton.
Graciously, the court scheduled his appearance date regarding trespassing charges brought by his ex-wife for two days after the election. He settled out of court the day after the election, a ploy, which in retrospect, should move him up a notch in the sex scandal list.
