The results of South Carolina's May 7 race for the 1st Congressional District is an ironic political event.
I say this because I remember Republicans pointing fingers and lashing out at Democrats in 1995 for re-electing Marion Barry as Washington's mayor following his drug conviction. Barry was less than ethical, less than professional and less than truthful, yet his party proudly placed him back in a prominent political role.
South Carolina Republicans are no different and no better than the District of Columbia's Democrats. By voting for and electing Mark Sanford, who is less than ethical, less than professional and less than truthful, they prove, once again, that politicians are above all rules and procedures -- ethical or otherwise.
I suppose the sad part is that Sanford is the best the Republicans have to offer. Really? Pitiful.
