The purchase of the Planters Row Golf Course tract was a timely and excellent use of the funds allocated to control growth on Hilton Head Island.
I have lived happily in Port Royal Plantation for 25 years. We went through the town's efforts to control growth for 10 to 15 years before it settled on the current approach of buying land or purchasing development rights to prevent more growth. We voted for the bond issues to provide the money for this purpose. I hope the town continues to hold this property and others it has purchased free of commercial and residential growth.
I was appalled to learn that our Port Royal Plantation board was holding secret discussions with a developer who planned to purchase the tract for development as a strip mall, apartments and condos. I hope the town would not have allowed rezoning of the property to allow such development.
Those discussions included the possibility of the developer giving about $2 million to the plantation in exchange for somehow allowing the new units to have access to our Port Royal Plantation amenities. I think the majority of plantation residents would disagree with that action, and the plantation board owes all the landowners a detailed presentation on what transpired in those meetings.
