The Second Amendment was not meant for every American to have a handgun. It was aimed at state militias, which have been transformed into state police forces in modern times.
There is nothing wrong with citizens having weapons, provided they have training and certification from a proper authority. But all assault weapons should be banned from sale to private citizens. The assault weapon is not necessary for home or personal protection. A handgun, with proper training, is good enough.
I have been a concealed-weapon permit holder for 20 years. I carry a handgun every day. I believe I have a mandate to not only protect myself and my family from harm, but also any innocent victim I come across. I carry this responsibility every day that I strap on my weapon.
I am a member of the National Rifle Association, but it must reconsider its stand on assault weapons and where they belong in our society. There must be an immediate ban on assault weapons and magazines that hold multiple rounds of ammunition. There must be a strict background check and at least a month-long wait to purchase a weapon.
There is no need for immediate purchase unless one has evil intent. The government should recall all assault weapons in circulation and reimburse the owner. A conscious effort to weed out all assault weapons should be a determined policy of all law enforcement officers in their everyday duty.
The time is now, not tomorrow.
