As idyllic as Hilton Head Island is, driving here is downright dangerous. Motorists ignore the speed limits, run red lights, weave between lanes to "get ahead," tail-gate, cut into or across traffic without adequate clearance and apparently view turn signals as optional pieces of equipment. Speeding in parking lots is also common.
The horror increases exponentially during tourist season. If law enforcement officers would cite these infractions more often, motorists would soon get the message: Such behaviors won't be tolerated here.
