Ten years ago, we had a viable and thriving mall here on Hilton Head Island. It had many fine and interesting shops, as well as a good mix of restaurants. Both visitors and local residents could enjoy a day of shopping while getting a bite to eat. What happened?
This same Hilton Head Town Council along with the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce has done nothing to prevent the demise of the mall. Hundreds of jobs have been lost, along with tax revenues. Now they want to dismantle the existing mall, brick by brick and start all over. The new mall calls for a large food store as if there aren't enough of these on the island. Plans also call for a large gas station, as if there aren't enough of these on the island, as well as a park and apartments.
What a waste of taxpayer money. It's as if they do not know or care how best to spend our tax dollars. On top of all this waste, they are getting a pay raise. For what?
Fellow citizens, I ask you: Do these actions or inactions merit a raise in salary?
And finally, I quote a recent letter writer, "No one in this economic climate would have the audacity and poor judgment to give themselves such exorbitant raises." That very statement speaks volumes about this Town Council.
