The League of Women Voters of Hilton Head Island/Bluffton Area strongly supports the Rural and Critical Lands Program bond referendum. The league urges all Beaufort County voters to vote for the referendum. A "yes" vote will permit Beaufort County to purchase additional properties or development rights by issuing general obligation bonds not to exceed a total of $25 million and not to exceed 1 mill in debt service.
The benefits to the county include protecting our waterways and scenic vistas, reducing congestion, providing recreational areas and preserving a way of life that is good for residents, businesses and the economy. It will provide the means to continue a program that has been very successful. Since 1999, approximately 20,000 acres have been conserved and 75 projects have been completed thanks to previous bond referenda totaling $90 million, most of which has now been spent.
The league has conducted meetings at which the land conservation program was explained, and recently it sponsored a tour of several of the conserved properties. What we learned, coupled with long-held national, state and local league positions regarding natural resources, made the league's decision to support the referendum an easy one.
