I applaud Paul Michau's efforts to beautify our beloved Beaufort.
Please urge Mayor Billy Keyserling and City Council to insist that the former Von Harten Bros. building on Carteret Street at North Street, next to The Chocolate Tree, be renovated and the falling-down wooden back portion be demolished. Apparently, the city has this power, but has not exercised it.
The city did exercise that power many years ago when Gaillard Pinckney didn't remove his well-drilling equipment from his yard as ordered. They threw him in jail (overnight) until outraged friends demanded his release. But the city's point was made and friends helped him reorganize his yard.
The derelict building on Carteret Street is not the "face" we want to show along the entrance to our historic downtown and residential neighborhoods. Pressure should be applied now by either condemning or forcing renovation of this eyesore.
