Act 388, the Property Tax Reform Act of 2006, certainly would not have passed if non-resident property owners were allowed to vote on this matter.
Forcing non-resident owners to foot the bill for education is not fair. When the school board wants more money, it wants the non-resident owners to pay more in taxes. Since we are non-resident owners, we have no children in schools here in Beaufort County, yet we pay school costs for full-time residents' children. This is completely unfair. It is taxation without representation.
Act 388 should be repealed, and taxes for school operations should be paid by all property owners, not just by non-resident property owners.
Never miss a local story.
